352 Vehicles @ $647 Million

More military-based manufacturing is heading for Sterling Heights, MI; now that General Dynamics Land Systems, (NYSE:GD) has scored another major contract.

Warren-based U.S. Army TACOM Lifecycle Management Command awarded the firm a $647 million contract to build 352 Stryker vehicles. The Stryker is an army assault vehicle used to carry troops and other personnel through combat zones.

General Dynamics Land Systems plans to build the vehicles and their assorted parts at its facilities in Sterling Heights, MI; Anniston, AL; Lima, OH; and London, Ontario. Sterling Heights has made a concerted effort in recent years to attract more research & development firms in the defense, military, and homeland security sectors.

The Virginia-based firm has built nearly 3,000 Strykers and trained 18,433 soldiers on how to operate them since 2000. The U.S. Army has seven Stryker Brigade Combat Teams, three of which are deployed in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.
