Required For Force Protection

The surge of U.S. forces in Afghanistan will likely require an additional 4,000 to 5,000 MRAP all-terrain vehicles beyond those previously budgeted, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.

Oshkosh Corporation, (NYSE:OSK), builds the MRAPs.

“Right now we have the money in the budget I believe for 5,000 or 6,000 MRAP all-terrain vehicles. With the additional forces that are being sent in, we are probably going to recommend increasing that number to protect those troops to about 10,000,” Gates said.

He added that meant “several billion dollars in and of itself” in additional costs for force protection.
