Must Maximize Protection, System Survivability and Mobility

The US Army’s much-anticipated Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) effort is beginning to take shape after officials detailed the platform’s requirements and acquisition strategy during a 3 December briefing for government representatives.

Major General John Bartley, the army’s Program Executive Officer (PEO) for Integration, said he believes the first production GCV which will be an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) will be complete in seven years.

The GCV effort is on its way to becoming a formal procurement program less than a year after the Department of Defense (DoD) terminated its predecessor: a family of Manned Ground Vehicles being developed under the former Future Combat Systems program.

The new group of vehicles must maximize “protection, system survivability and mobility”, while also allowing for significant growth and additional technology to be incorporated in the future, Gen Bartley said.

Much of the GCV’s attributes and specifications are being left for industry to determine based on what is technologically achievable.
