The total value of the contract modifications is $60.6 million.

“The Bradley and M113 Family of Vehicles play integral roles in the Army’s Heavy Brigade Combat Teams,” said Joe McCarthy, vice president and general manager of HBCT Systems for BAE Systems. ‘BAE Systems continues to support our troops overseas by maintaining and improving these vehicles to ensure soldiers are protected and able to complete their mission.”

Specifically, the contracts include:

  • -$54.4 million for installation of survivability modifications on Bradley vehicles at Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Stewart, Georgia, Fort Bliss, Texas, Iraq, Kuwait and Germany. Modifications include an advanced fire suppression system, new seats, new ammunition restraints, and mounting provisions for armor tiles.
  • -$5.4 million for design updates to the Bradley Operation Desert Storm Situational Awareness vehicles to more closely parallel that of a Bradley A3 vehicle. This design work supports production deliveries to the National Guard in 2010.
  • -$414,000 for installation of the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and Environmental Control Unit (ECU) modification kits on the MLRS redesigned cabs in the field. The award also includes training to the MLRS crew and maintenance personnel.
  • -$350,000 for integration of the Mounted Soldier Systems (MSS) for the M113A3 Ambulance vehicle. The system includes cooling vests for crew members, helmet mounted display, wireless intercom improvements, and the Check 6 infra-red rear view system.

Work on these contracts will be managed out of the BAE Systems facility in Santa Clara, California and will be performed at other facilities including Fort Hood, Texas, and York, Pennsylvania.

The obvious preference nowadays is doing more with less – repair, maintain and sustain what you have in hand, buy what you must have now, and push back everything else to better days. This attitude was reflected along the exhibition aisles, absent of major new systems requiring major commitments and funding, the displays showed abundant ‘life extension’ for current systems; army material command and its Program Executive Offices (PEOs) exhibited masses of new and ‘off the shelf’ systems, recently acquired in response to urgent requirements from theater. The present focus is on supporting the systems in the field, rapidly fielded to better respond to the changing operational conditions – a daunting task, given the scale and intensity of system’s usage in the field and today’s challenging economical conditions.

Worn down by the extensive combat use and harsh environmental conditions in theater, used equipment is being repaired and reconditioned through the post deployment RESET, offering an opportunity for systems improvements and modernization. This process has replaced much of the programmatic product improvements processes of the past. The planned insertion of ‘spin-outs’ from the Future Combat Systems program into the first Brigade Combat Team is scheduled to be carried out in 2011, as part of the brigade’s post combat RESET process. This program will include the installation of new radios, networking systems and inclusion of certain software updates to upgrade command and control elements, in addition to the supply of new sensors, unmanned systems and missiles.

While armored vehicles are the systems making much of the news these days, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities and more specifically the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), and helicopters are among the ‘most wanted list’ of military hardware.

The latest addition to the company’s Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) is on display on the BAE Systems stand at the Defence Systems & Equipment International 2009 (DSEi) exhibition.

The tough Euro V emission control regulations on engine design call for lower levels of carbon particulates, nitrous oxides, carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons. The GTV maximizes tactical mobility and operational capability while meeting stringent emission control regulations, said Dennis Morris, BAE Systems President, Global Tactical Systems. This is a new generation of military vehicles.

With 45,000 vehicles produced by BAE Systems for the United States, worldwide parts, service and support are readily available.

The GTV also features the Long Term Armour Solution (LTAS). The key benefit of the LTAS solution is that it allows for rapid conversion from a performance truck to a highly protected tactical armoured vehicle without compromising load capability, mission certainty or weight-related safety.

The GTV also includes seats and seating restraints meeting current international safety legislation. The GTV features the Mine Blast Resistant Seat (MBRS) and 4-point restraint system, which is easily modified to accept a 5-point restraint and is produced by BAE Systems’ Security & Survivability business. The MBRS is easily resettable and lightweight, and integrates the energy absorbing system into the seat itself. With more than $7 Million in orders to date, the MBRS is designed to fit a wide variety of vehicles and is proving to be successful in the global defense market.

GTV is based on a fleet of combat-proven, armour-protected logistic tactical vehicles and is designed to incorporate modifications according to customer specifications.

“We welcome BAE Systems, one of the top defense companies in the country, and their newest facility to Michigan, said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. This groundbreaking is another positive sign of our continuing efforts to diversify the state’s economy and create good-paying jobs for Michigan workers.”

The new environmentally-friendly, 200,000 square-foot building will sit on 81 acres. The Sterling Heights campus will focus on prototyping and engineering work. The facility will also include an auditorium, virtual reality dome and test track.

This groundbreaking is an important move not only for BAE Systems, but for the state of Michigan, said Linda Hudson, BAE Systems Land & Armaments president. Our new facility will bring in more high paying engineering jobs for the community. Our presence in Sterling Heights also demonstrates our commitment to remaining a leading supplier to the U.S. military and allows us to closely interface with our customer.

The Sterling Heights facility will house employees from both BAE Systems U.S. Combat Systems (USCS) and Global Tactical Systems (GTS) lines of business. The U.S. Combat Systems business produces and upgrades combat vehicle systems in major vehicle families armored Bradley Fighting Vehicles, heavy equipment recovery vehicles, amphibious assault vehicles, armored personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery and mine resistant ambush protected vehicles (MRAP). USCS also specializes in a wide range of naval gun systems and munitions for ship protection and fire support. Global Tactical Systems produces the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles and Caiman series of MRAP vehicles.

BAE Systems began the expansion project in February 2009. The prototype facility will be completed in June 2010. Final construction is expected to be complete in fall 2011 with full staff occupancy expected later that year.
